Frequently Asked Questions

 1.     Who can become a registered member of UG Library?

All registered undergraduate and graduate students, academic and non-academic staff and members of the Council of the University are eligible for membership.  Students are required to pay a refundable cautionary deposit of $1,500.00 at the time of initial registration.

 2.    Can I register with the library if I am not a UG student?

Yes, you can. Other persons including visiting researchers may be granted Library privileges at the discretion of the Librarian.  If borrowing privileges are granted, applicants will be required to pay an annual fee of $20,000 to borrow 3 books with 75% to be refunded if nothing is owed at the end of the period; $6,500.00 to borrow 1 book with 75% to be refunded if nothing is owed at the end of the period.

Non-borrowing Visitor(s) will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $1000.00.

 3.     How can I register with the library?

You may become a registered member of the library by completing the online registration form at: http://library.uog.edu.gy/portal/index.php/library-online-registration-form Or visit the library during opening hours. Be sure to take your current student ID card.

4.    Where or how can I check out books?

The access to the Library’s collections is closed to the public, however, you may visit the library during opening hours to borrow print resources. Alternatively, all books and library materials may be requested in advance for pickup.  Please wait until you have confirmation that your items are available before visiting the library building. 5.     How can I return Library materials during this period?

If you are indebted to the Turkeyen Library and need to return outstanding Library books or tickets for Library clearance, kindly visit the library between Monday – Friday during 09:00hrs-13:00hrs (1 p.m). Staff will be available to assist you. Please note the Library will be closed on all National Holidays.

6.    How can I return the Library’s Reading room tickets if I am unable to travel?

-        If you are unable to visit the physical library but need to return your library cards for library clearance, please follow the steps outlined below which are tailored for Turkeyen Campus. Scan the tickets (name and address must be visible) and send to the following library’s email address, if they are required for clearance.  7.     How do I pay fines or fees that are outstanding?

Fines can be paid in person at the library (See opening hours) or any branch of Republic Bank. For banking details, kindly send email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

8.    How do I access electronic resources?

Current UG students and staff may access online library resources on and off campus. Everyone is welcome to use the online resources. This includes access to online databases, e-journals and e-books etc.,

 9.    How long can I keep library items checked out?

Based on the loan period for the book checked out a student may have the book for the following loan period: (a) Three (3) weeks (b) One (1) week (c) Forty-eight hours (48hrs) or (d) Two (2) hours – not to be taken out of the library.

 

10. Can I renew my items?

Yes, you may renew your items (except for 48hr loan) and books that are overdue. Renewals can be done by the following ways:

(a)   In-person - Visit the library (see opening hours) with the book and ask the Circulation Staff for a renewal

(b)  Telephone – call the Circulation Department and be ready to provide the following details: USI number; author of the book; title of the book; the accession number of the book; the call number of the book and the date due.

 11.  How many library items can I check out?

As an Undergraduate student you may borrow up to eight (8) items, two (2) of which are for reading room use only.  Postgraduate students may borrow up to twelve (12) items, two of which are for reading room use only.

12. Can I request items from other libraries?

Yes, you can. Currently enrolled UG students and staff may request to have items from other Libraries sent to Turkeyen Campus library for them. Just check the Library Online Public Access Catalog for holdings and availability, then fill out one of our Interlibrary Loan Request Forms for the type of material you need.

13.   How/where can I access the Interlibrary Loan Request Forms?

The Interlibrary Loan Request Form is accessed the following ways:

(a)   In-person -visit the library during the opening hours and request the form from the Main Information Desk

 14.   What are the opening hours of the library?

Access to the Reading areas and the physical book collections is currently closed to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, you can visit the library from Monday to Friday between 09:00h to 13:00 h and a staff member will deal with your request. The library will revert to its standard Opening hours when the University resumes its face-to-face mode.

15.  How do I place a Hold / Reserve a book in the library?

Books on loan to other readers may be reserved.  Reservation can be placed online by logging into your user account which is accessed through the Library’s portal. The reader shall be alerted when the book is available via email or telephone.  In the case of normal loans, books should be collected within seven (7) days.

16.  Can I print and photocopy documents in the library?

Yes, the library provides a printing service in the Rabindranath Tagore Resource Center (RTRC) and the Photocopying services are offered through the Circulation Department Please note that a cost is attached for those services to all patrons.

17.  How much does it cost to print?

The cost of printing is as follows: Printing in Black and white is G$20.00 per page, Color printing is G$140.00 per page and Prints with Graphics is G$40.00 per page.

18. Can I have food or drink in the library?

Food is strictly prohibited in the library. Drinking water (contained in plastic bottles or cups with covers) is allowed in the Library.

 

19. How can I contact a librarian?

There are various ways to contact a librarian. During regular library hours (8:30-4:30 M-F) you can call, chat, send an email or text a librarian. 20.        Is Internet access available in the Library?
